MICRONEEDLING: MY HONEST THOUGHTS
Everything You Need to Know About Microneedling: Is It Worth the Hype?
Introduction
When it comes to skincare treatments that promise real results, microneedling has been making major waves. From celebrities to your local skin clinic, everyone seems to be talking about it and for good reason... but is it for the reasons you think they’re for?! I’ll share my honest, personal experience later in this blog. If you’ve been curious about what microneedling actually does and whether it’s right for your skin, here’s your no-fluff, real-talk guide.
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that uses tiny needles to create micro-injuries on the skin’s surface. These micro-injuries stimulate your skin’s natural healing process, encouraging the production of collagen and elastin, two proteins that are key to youthful, resilient skin. It’s said to help acne scars, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, enlarged pores and overall texture.
🔍 What to Expect During the Procedure
Prep: Your skin will be cleansed and numbed with a topical anaesthetic to reduce discomfort. Some clinics recommend you to skip the numbing cream for better results! Yes it’s doable if you have a higher pain tolerance.
Treatment: A microneedling device (manual dermaroller or electronic pen) is used to gently puncture the skin. There’s different devices out there! Ask them before you agree.
Duration: The procedure takes around 30–60 minutes, depending on the area treated.
Aftercare: Your skin might look red and feel sensitive — like a sunburn — for 1–4 days. Avoid makeup, sun exposure, and harsh products during recovery.
🧴 Pro Tips for Aftercare
Keep skin hydrated with a gentle, soothing moisturizer.
Use SPF religiously — your skin will be more sensitive to sun damage post-treatment.
Avoid actives like retinoids, AHAs/BHAs, and vitamin C for at least 3–5 days unless directed by your practitioner.
Stick to a clean pillowcase and avoid touching your face excessively.
⚠️ Are There Any Risks?
Redness, swelling, and flaking
Temporary breakouts - Some people actually hate microneedling because of the purge. I would highly recommending have Zilch Formulas [LIZPP] supplements in your cabinets if you’re worried!
Infection (if aftercare isn't followed properly)
Hyperpigmentation (especially for those with deeper skin tones — always consult with a derm who understands melanin-rich skin!)
Tip: Be wary of some at-home devices. While they can be tempting, they often lack the precision and hygiene of professional treatments and can increase the risk of damage or infection. If you want to use an at home microneedling tool, Banish Acne Scars [LIZY] offers great dermastamps which work well for hyperpigmentation and shallow scarring. They don't work for deeper scarring.
👩🔬 How Many Sessions Do You Need?
While you might see subtle improvements after one treatment, a series of 3–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart is typically recommended for optimal results.
🧘♀️ Is It Worth It?
Unfortunately this is highly individual. There’s no way in knowing how the person’s skin will respond despite studies. Some people’s collagen remodels well post microneedling, and have fantastic results. While for others… aka me… LOL truthfully don’t find it as effective for deep acne scarring. I’ve had 7+ professional microneedling sessions now, yes in clinics by professionals, using up to 2.5mm with little improvement to my acne scars (deep ice pick, boxcars). They have definitely improved the overall texture, and added plumpness to my face temporarily but would I do it again for scarring? No.
Final Thoughts
Microneedling isn’t a miracle overnight fix but with consistency, patience, and the right professional, it can help your overall texture and plumpness. To what degree? Highly dependant on the individual on their own skin concerns. What specialists shouldn’t do is to give high hopes about results. Promising improvements after committing to multiple sessions is just plain greedy and mean!
If you’ve been thinking about trying it, do your research, talk to a few trusted professionals, and always listen to your skin. If you don’t see results after 3-6 sessions, I truly think it is a waste of $$!
Goodluck!
And lots of love,
Your girl, Liz.
